What size wedding cake do i need?

So what does that look like in cake? Because cake pans only come in so many sizes, you can’t usually get an exact match in cake size in relation to your guest count. You will always be a bit off - and it is better to have a bit more than not enough!

If you plan to follow the tradition of keeping the top tier for your first anniversary, to relive your momentous occasion, then remember to exclude the top tier from the total number of servings.

Your cake designer will be the biggest help with navigating the size/number of servings - it’s their job!

You’ve been dreaming about your wedding cake, and you have all these plans for how it should look - but how big does it need to be? How many servings should it have?

First, have a look at your guest list. And then, decide if cake will be the main dessert, or served with a late night table. If cake is for dessert, you are going to want to make sure you have a slice for each guest. But if cake is for later in the evening? Then aim for 50-60% of your guest count - not everybody will want cake later in the evening. And always pad it with a bit extra, to allow for the way your venue may cut the slices.

But what is a serving size? The standard wedding dessert serving size is 1” x 2” - and in the case of Fancy That Cake, it would be 1” x2” x 5.5” - as the standard height for my tiers is about 5.5”.

Another thing to consider is your venue. Think about your venue size when choosing your cake size to be sure it’s proportionate. If the room is large with high ceilings, then a small-sized wedding cake might look a little lost and out of place. Styrofoam dummy tiers can be combined with real tiers to add height and grandeur if you want to go larger but don’t need that many servings of cake.

Your cake is a design element of your reception, so place it proudly on display, not in the back corner as an afterthought. You want a focal point your guests will ooh and aah over!
