wedding cakes don’t have to be white - let’s talk colour!

Can we just say it louder for the people in the back? Wedding cakes do NOT have to be white! Seriously—there is absolutely no rule, tradition, or ancient cake law that says your wedding cake must be coated in white fondant or ivory buttercream. As a cake designer who has been serving couples since 2010, I’ve seen lots of colour in my designs! So if you’ve been secretly dreaming of a cake that’s bold, vibrant, moody, or even downright unconventional—this is your official permission slip to go for it.

Your wedding cake is so much more than just dessert. It’s part of your reception decor! It sits there, often right in the center of the room or on its own special table, being photographed from every angle. It deserves to match the vibe, theme, and personality of your big day just as much as the flowers, the outfits, and the playlists do.

So… why not add a little colour?

There are so many beautiful colours in the rainbow—literally—and you can use any of them to bring your wedding cake to life. Think soft pastels for a garden party wedding, bold citrus hues for a tropical vibe, dusty blues or sage greens for something a little more romantic and earthy. Or go dramatic with jewel tones like plum, burgundy, emerald, or even black if you're going for a moody, modern aesthetic.

Yes, black! Black wedding cakes are stunning, elegant, and just a little bit edgy (in the best way). Don’t be afraid to play with contrast or surprise your guests with a look they’re not expecting.

Now, here’s a little inside scoop from someone who’s been elbow-deep in frosting more times than I can count: when it comes to deeper or darker colours, fondant is your best friend. Why? Because dark-coloured buttercream—like navy, burgundy, or black—can stain guests' lips, teeth, and even clothes if they’re not careful. Nobody wants to look like they’ve just eaten a tube of lipstick in their wedding photos!

Fondant, on the other hand, gives you rich, saturated colour without the risk of colourful mouths—and it provides a smooth, clean canvas for gorgeous designs, painting, stencilling, or even metallic accents. So if you’re leaning toward a more dramatic palette, I’ll make it work beautifully, and I’ll make it practical too.

At the end of the day, this is your wedding. If you want a whimsical cake covered in rainbow sprinkles, a dark and romantic black velvet number, or a soft ombré buttercream with painted florals—do it. You’re not following anyone else’s rules. Set your own.

And I’ll be right here cheering you on (and happily sketching cake designs to match your unique vision)
